‘But why?’ Dee whined, for what might have been the thirtieth time as she watched Rosie pack. ‘The boys have only just got here and you’re whisking them off again? It isn’t fair. We had loads of plans. We were going to do so many lovely things together.’ She sat on the bed, watching as Rosie opened drawers. ‘This isn’t about the car, is it? Because Paul really feels b—’
‘Of course not.’ Rosie focussed hard on selecting underwear, an all too easy task when she’d brought so little with her. ‘It’s just…that crazy woman. It was awful. I want to get away where no one knows about us…I mean…me. And…and…it’ll be better for the boys. They’ve had a dreadful time at school. Getting teased about my terrible ungrateful attitude. Taunted. Bullied. Luke’s been giving all his pocket money away and poor Tim…’ She choked as she thought about it. ‘I can’t believe they never said anything.’
‘But the whole summer… In Scotland. I could understand if it were that Tuscan villa.’ Dee gave a weak attempt at a laugh. ‘Better pack your sweaters!’ She fingered one of Rosie’s new purchases, a designer silk scarf. ‘Oh well, Skye isn’t that far. And we have to break in Paul’s new car anyway. A short road trip will be just the thing. Although goodness knows how I’ll bribe Kylie to—’
‘No.’ With horror Rosie envisaged the whole lot descending on her. ‘Really, we’ll be better on our own. Just the three of us.’ She saw Dee’s disbelieving stare and flushed up to her highlighted roots. ‘It’s just…’ she was stammering now, trying to improvise, ‘I want to make it up to them…the boys…have me all to themselves…less chance of being noticed or followed…you’d hate it anyway…and Charlie said…’
‘Charlie!’ Dee’s face was livid as she spat out the name. ‘That’s it. He’s behind this, isn’t he? Trying to alienate you from us. Oh, don’t think I haven’t noticed him smarming up to you, making himself comfy in our home, whispering poison about us in the showroom. Not coincidence, is it, that you’re rich as stink and immediately your lying, cheating ex-husband is your new best friend.’ Her nose wrinkled as she put on a squeaky mocking voice. ‘Wants you to move close to him. Wants to get you away from that nasty Dee and Paul.’
She stood up abruptly, crossing her arms, sharp and no-nonsense. ‘Well, let me tell you something, Rosie, my friend. Charlie Dixon only takes care of Charlie Dixon. And if you’re looking for advice from the man who did the dirty on you, then you’re acting like a gullible fool…’
